A tense situation was reported near the S.W.R.D. Bandaranaike statue near the Galle Face Green in Colombo as the Police attempted to arrest four protesters.
The Police had attempted to arrest the anti-government protesters on charges of violating a recent court order that was issued pertaining to the vicinity of the statue.
On Wednesday (20), the Colombo Fort Magistrate issued an order prohibiting the public from assembling around a 50-meter radius distance of the statue.
The S.W.R.D. Bandaranaike statue has been a key landmark during the recent public protests that were held against the former President and his government.
The Police had today attempted to arrest a group of protesters who had been idling near the statue, following which a heated exchange of words took place between both parties.
Meanwhile, protesters have announced that they are removing their settlements from the 50m radius of the statue.
They said the measure is being taken as a temporary precaution. (NewsWire)
